With the first week of NaNoWriMo behind us, our LiterarYeti mascot and social media coordinator share a progress update on their NaNoWriMo word count journey.
When the BookBaby marketing team originally came up the LiterarYeti concept, his role in the NaNoWriMo challenge was to represent the outside forces that might prevent a writer from reaching his or her NaNoWriMo word count goal. As we figuratively brought him to life with the help of 3D printing company Shapeways, his role started to change, at least for me.
I starting acting out his life experiences on his own social media accounts, letting him take the credit for my word count accomplishments, and started to realize that for him to succeed, I needed to succeed. He’s grown a small community of followers on Twitter and Instagram on his own (okay, I helped), but however small, I don’t want him to let them down. I really needed to put pen to paper to make this happen. Without my help, and the help of the NaNoWriMo community, he wouldn’t be able to climb back up his own mountain! So far, we’ve introduced the main characters, the primary settings, the villain and other opposing entities, and traversed several scenes in my novel. The beginning is still fuzzy, and the ending has yet to reveal itself to me. I also have a feeling that my story might work better as a series than as a standalone work, but I’m not certain yet.
What I do know is that my dialogue isn’t great, my flow between scenes could be better, and I’m learning – a lot. I should also be taking more advice from this very blog! All this month, we will be updating our hub page with helpful content, infographics, and more to help you reach your writing goal. Don’t forget to check out the interactive version of our word count calendar – featuring none other than yours truly, the LiterarYeti!
Personifying this little sandstone character has allowed me to step outside of myself, bypassing any writer’s block I had experienced at the start because I didn’t have time to finish my outline. I made it most of the way though, so I still self-awarded myself the “Planner” Personal Achievement Badge. Here’s to adding the Eureka Moment to my collection soon!
The LiterarYeti’s stumpy arms are raised like Rocky’s were when he triumphed the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum, and with him cheering me on from the corner of the ring, I’m confident that we’ll reach our 50,000 NaNoWriMo word goal together.
