While the “Reading Habits Of Five Generations” infographic has epic numbers of views on this blog, we’ve featured these popular “reading habits” posts for several years as well, and while some things change, some remain the same. Thanks to to the good folks at GlobalEnglishEditing for putting this together.
I’m not about to wax romantic about the good things that have come out of the pandemic, but it’s hard to be upset about a 25 percent increase in time spent reading among Americans in 2021. Good for authors, good for readers, let’s take that as a win. And speaking of romance, book sales show Romance is America’s favorite book genre. Hot. But 23 percent of Americans didn’t read a book last year. Not so hot.
By the way, what’s up with France? I mean, someone has to be in last place amongst European nations when it comes to reading, but that’s a pretty steep drop off from the average. And I’m assuming that Norway and Turkey are listed separately because they’re not in the EU, but what about the UK? Was Brexit just another media hoax?
And while we reported on the health of the book market last year, it’s nice to see these numbers reinforced here, with print sales up in massive numbers in lots of genres—graphic novel sales up over 140 percent! Wow.
I certainly hope the hundreds of folks working for BookBaby are included in the statistic that the publishing industry employs 315,731 people around the world. And damn, that’s a pretty specific number.
Enjoy perusing this infographic, leave your insightful thoughts in the comment section, and pass a book along to a friend who didn’t read last year and let’s work on squashing that number of non-reading Americans.
